The Ondo State Government has confirmed that it received several petitions seeking a coroner’s inquest into the death of former Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, who passed away on December 27, 2023.
The confirmation came on Monday from Olukayode Ajulo, the state’s Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice.
He revealed that the Ministry of Justice was contacted by different groups, including professional associations and residents of Owo, the late governor’s hometown.
These petitioners are asking for the circumstances surrounding Akeredolu’s death to be thoroughly investigated due to what they believe are unanswered questions.
According to Ajulo, Ondo State law allows members of the public to request a coroner’s inquest when there is suspicion of foul play or when the cause of death appears unclear.
He assured that all legal steps will be followed and that no one will be treated unfairly in the process.
He explained that decisions such as examining the governor’s remains or summoning individuals fall under the jurisdiction of a coroner judge.
Ajulo stressed that the investigation would not be influenced by political interests or personal bias.
He also called on the public to remain calm and law-abiding as the process unfolds, assuring that the government will carry out its duties without fear or favour.
