Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the leading socio-cultural group of the Igbo people, has endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term, emphasizing the importance of rotational presidency as a cornerstone of Nigeria’s democracy.
According to Politics Nigeria, in a statement issued by its Deputy President General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, the group highlighted the need for fairness and equity in governance. It argued that after eight years of Northern leadership under former President Muhammadu Buhari, it is crucial for the South to retain the presidency until 2031 to ensure a balanced and inclusive political system.
“Ohanaeze Ndigbo’s endorsement of President Tinubu for a second term in 2027 is a commitment to peace, stability, and infrastructural development in the Southeast,” the statement noted. “We call on our members and the broader Igbo community to support this vision, prioritizing unity and progress over narrow interests.”
However, the group also made a strong appeal to President Tinubu, urging him to release Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Ohanaeze argued that Kanu’s release would be a significant gesture of goodwill that could help restore peace and stability in the Southeast, a region currently dealing with insecurity.
In addition, Ohanaeze outlined a comprehensive development agenda for the Southeast, calling for urgent federal action on key infrastructure projects and economic revitalization efforts. The group called for the speedy completion of federal road projects, equitable representation in the 2025 national census, and the creation of two new states—Anioma and Aba—to promote regional equity and development.
