The Ogun State government, under the leadership of Governor Dapo Abiodun, has announced new policies aimed at improving food security and market operations in the state.
The governor revealed that a price control system will be implemented to address the rising cost of food items.
To further this effort, the state’s Bulk Purchasing Company has been rebranded as Gateway Trading Company, which will oversee bulk purchases and sales of food products at more affordable rates for residents.
The initiative will initially be launched in four zones of the state.
Additionally, Governor Abiodun declared the suspension of all market levies, allowing only development and environmental charges that directly contribute to market improvements.
A newly established market enforcement task force will ensure the elimination of illegal fees and intimidation tactics, which have been rampant in markets. Those found violating these directives will face legal consequences.
The state government also plans to support farmers and traders with low-interest loans and grants through the Ogun Empowerment Scheme.
Waste management in markets will be improved, with the involvement of relevant state agencies to ensure proper disposal and cleanliness.
Chief Yemisi Abass, the Iyaloja of Yewaland, expressed satisfaction with these new measures, noting that they would greatly benefit the people of Ogun State.
