The Eselu of Iselu Kingdom in Yewa North, Ogun State, Oba Akintunde Akinyemi, has expressed his displeasure over the chieftaincy title of “King of Street” given to controversial singer Habeeb Olalomi Okikiola, popularly known as Portable.
The title was conferred by the Olu of Itori, Oba Abdulfatai Akamo, during his 21st coronation anniversary.
In an open letter addressed to the public, Oba Akinyemi described the title as unusual in Yoruba tradition.
He stated that granting such a title could create confusion and should be revoked.
According to him, the title gives an impression of authority over all streets in Ogun State, which is inappropriate.
He suggested that if the Olu of Itori wished to honor Portable, the title should have been specific to his domain, such as “King of Itori Street.”
The monarch also questioned the timing of the chieftaincy award, noting that Portable is currently facing trial at the Ogun State High Court for allegedly assaulting government officials.
He believes honouring the singer at such a time sends the wrong message.
Furthermore, Oba Akinyemi warned that the chieftaincy system should not be misused, as it could affect the reputation of traditional rulers.
He urged the Ogun State Council of Obas and Chiefs to intervene and correct what he sees as an improper installation.
He also advised that Portable should focus on improving his behavior and career rather than receiving such a title.
The controversy over Portable’s new title has sparked discussions among traditional leaders and the public, with concerns over its impact on the credibility of Yoruba chieftaincy traditions.
