Peter Obi has spoken out against the Federal Government’s decision to spend ₦39 billion on renovating the International Conference Centre (ICC) in Abuja.
He raised concerns on Tuesday in Abuja, questioning why such a huge amount was used for a facility that is already in working condition while many Nigerians are struggling with basic needs like food, education, and healthcare.
The former Anambra State governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate compared the renovation project to the daily challenges faced by ordinary Nigerians, especially schoolchildren.
He pointed out that public school teachers in the Federal Capital Territory have been on strike for over three months due to unpaid salaries, yet billions are being spent on a conference centre.
Obi shared his belief that the same money could have been used to provide tools like computers to schools across the country.
He explained that during his time as governor, his administration worked hard to improve computer access in schools, ensuring that even if students had to share devices, they still had the opportunity to learn digital skills.
He also revealed his recent support to Government Girls Secondary School in Chibok, Borno State, where he funded development projects worth over ₦6 million.
These included the provision of a borehole, solar power supply, and a laboratory. Additionally, he donated ten laptops and two printers to the school.
Although he had planned to personally deliver the items, Obi said he could not visit Chibok due to security challenges in the area.
The items were instead delivered through activist Aisha Yesufu, who helped facilitate the process after the school reached out on May 31 to seek help in improving their computer literacy efforts.
Local leader Dauda Iliya, who received the donations, assured that they would be properly used to help students in the community.
