Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, the former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, landed in Abuja on Sunday evening in a quiet return, sparking speculation about his attempts to secure a political resolution.
Sources at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport confirmed that Obasa arrived without the large entourage that once accompanied him in his prime.
His visit to the capital follows a failed attempt to meet with President Bola Tinubu in the United Arab Emirates after his impeachment on January 13.
Obasa, who was ousted from office after a majority of lawmakers voted for his removal, has been trying to mend his political ties.
Despite his travels, including a visit to Atlanta on January 8 with a group of loyalists, sources say he left his supporters stranded, damaging relationships with those who once backed him.
The impeachment, which saw more than two-thirds of the House vote for his removal, has left Obasa facing mounting challenges.
He is reportedly hoping to settle ongoing investigations by the EFCC and ICPC and is seeking a way to restore his political standing.
His legal team has advised him to accept the impeachment as constitutional and publicly acknowledge it, Politics Nigeria reports.
Obasa’s tenure ended amid accusations of misconduct, leading to the election of his successor, Mojisola Meranda.
His downfall is linked to his efforts to build a broad political network, which allegedly led to conflicts with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the Governor Advisory Council.
His recent actions, including directing lawmakers to purchase gifts for his supporters, have further strained his relationships within the party.
