A final-year student of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Joshua Temitope Oladepo, has accused the institution of deliberately removing his name from the 2025 graduation list as retaliation for participating in a student protest against former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, during his controversial visit to the campus on June 5, 2025.
Oladepo told Newsmen on Thursday that he was shocked to discover that his name had been excluded from the convocation list despite completing all academic requirements, receiving an official Notification of Results, and paying the mandatory convocation fee.
“I was one of the students arrested and detained when Wike came to our campus and we resisted,” he said. “This evening, I tried to log into my convocation portal but I was told that my name has been excluded from the graduation list. This wasn’t so initially. I had already paid the N40,000 convocation fee. This act can be linked to our resistance against the coming of Wike.”
A screenshot of the OAU convocation portal seen by Newsmen confirmed the message: “Your name is not yet on the 2025 Convocation List. Please send email to [email protected] or visit the Exams and Records Office.”
Documents obtained by SaharaReporters also show that Oladepo successfully paid the convocation fee through Remita on November 23, 2025, with RRR: 171379218766.
Further findings revealed that OAU had issued Oladepo an official Notification of Results dated October 3, 2025. The document, signed by Y.O. Akinyele, Deputy Registrar of the Examinations and Records Division, confirmed that he completed his academic programme in Political Science and graduated with a Second Class Upper Division.
“This is to certify that OLADEPO Joshua Temitope was a student in the Department of Political Science… The candidate successfully completed an academic programme and was awarded the degree of B.Sc Political Science… His/Her certificate is being prepared and will soon be ready for collection,” the letter reads.
Despite possessing the verified result and completing all clearance requirements, Oladepo insists the sudden exclusion is targeted punishment for his involvement in the June 5 protest, which led to several arrests, including his.
The university has not yet issued an official response to the allegation.
