The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has revealed that the boat mishap that claimed the lives of Nollywood actor Junior Pope and seven others was caused by ignorance and failure to follow safety protocols.
The agency’s Managing Director, Mr. Bola Oyebamiji, disclosed this during a safety sensitization campaign in Onitsha.
According to NIWA, the victims did not register their boat or wear life jackets, and their demonstrations inside the boat distracted the operator, leading to a collision with a wooden object that capsized the boat. NIWA emphasized the importance of adhering to safety rules, including boat registration and wearing life jackets.
The agency warned boat operators and passengers to register their boats and wear life jackets to avoid arrest, seizure, and prosecution. NIWA also announced plans to collaborate with stakeholders and state governments to sensitize communities living along the banks of River Niger about the impending 2024 flood.
The event featured a demonstration on the importance of using life jackets, and attendees included boat operators, stakeholders, and community leaders. NIWA reiterated its commitment to ensuring safety on Nigeria’s waterways and urged all stakeholders to adhere to safety protocols.
