President Bola Tinubu met with Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori on Tuesday at the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja. The governor arrived at the presidential premises around 3:45 p.m., coming alone, as seen by observers.
This marks Oborevwori’s first face-to-face meeting with Tinubu since his recent defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). On April 23, 2025, Oborevwori became the first sitting Delta governor to leave the PDP since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999.
The wave of political shifts in Delta comes after key figures like former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, Deputy Governor Monday Onyeme, several commissioners, and local government chairmen also moved to the APC following private discussions in Asaba. Okowa had previously been the PDP’s vice-presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections.
The defection in Delta is part of a wider trend seen in Rivers and Cross River states, reducing the PDP’s control to just ten states and weakening its once stronghold in the South-South region.
Meanwhile, sources within the APC suggest that more governors may soon join the ruling party, including Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom, Peter Mbah of Enugu, Aba Yusuf of Kano, and suspended Rivers Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
These developments come as the PDP, Labour Party, and the New Nigeria Peoples Party continue to struggle with internal disputes and the loss of key members, leaving the opposition landscape fragmented as the APC strengthens its hold.
