The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a forecast predicting widespread rainfall and thunderstorms across various parts of the country from Sunday through Tuesday.
In its latest weather outlook released on Saturday in Abuja, NiMet indicated that parts of the northern region — including Taraba and Adamawa — may experience early morning thunderstorms on Sunday, with more intense weather conditions expected by afternoon and evening.
Areas such as Katsina, Kano, Zamfara, Kaduna, Jigawa, Borno, Gombe, and Bauchi are also likely to be affected later in the day.
The North-Central states are expected to see cloudy skies in the morning, while thunderstorms and rainfall may occur in the afternoon across the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Nasarawa, Kwara, Kogi, Benue, and Plateau.
In the South, NiMet projected a generally cloudy start to the day, with later rainfall over areas such as Oyo, Ogun, Ondo, Ebonyi, Ekiti, Edo, Abia, Imo, Enugu, Anambra, Lagos, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Rivers, Delta, and Bayelsa.
On Monday, the agency forecasted morning thunderstorms for parts of Sokoto, Zamfara, and Bauchi in the northern region.
As the day progresses, further rain is expected across Adamawa, Taraba, Katsina, Kano, Jigawa, Borno, Bauchi, and Kaduna.
Thunderstorms are also likely to hit North-Central states, including the FCT, Niger, Kogi, and Nasarawa in the morning, followed by rainfall in Plateau, Kwara, and Benue later in the day. Parts of Cross River, Rivers, Bayelsa, and Akwa Ibom in the South are predicted to receive morning rain, with more widespread showers expected across the southern belt by evening.
By Tuesday, moderate rains and isolated thunderstorms may start the day in Zamfara and Kaduna. Later, more areas in the North — including Taraba, Adamawa, Kano, Bauchi, Gombe, and Borno — could experience thunderstorms and heavy rain.
In the North-Central zone, rainfall is anticipated over Niger, Plateau, and Benue during the morning, while later thunderstorms are expected in the FCT, Nasarawa, Kogi, Kwara, and Benue.
In the southern region, Lagos and Bayelsa may experience rain early in the day, with extended rainfall forecast across most southern states throughout Tuesday.
NiMet advised Nigerians to take necessary safety measures as strong winds are expected to precede some of the storms. The public is urged to secure loose items, avoid unnecessary travel during heavy downpours, and unplug electrical appliances to reduce the risk of power surges.
The agency also advised staying clear of tall trees and to keep track of weather updates.
It encouraged airline operators to obtain detailed, location-specific forecasts from NiMet for flight safety and planning.
