Report says Former Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, has expressed displeasure about being neglected by friends, colleagues and associates during his trying period, particularly now that he is in jail in the United Kindgom.

In this piece, our correspondent, MIRACLE OGUNDE, puts together some opinions of Nigerians on our social media pages over the purported disappointment by the ex deputy Senate president of Nigeria.

His reports…

Ike Ekweremadu, former deputy senate president, was sentenced to nine years and eight months in prison for organ trafficking on Friday, May 5, 2023 at the Central Criminal Court, Old Bailey, UK.

Ekweremadu’s wife, Beatrice, was sentenced to four years and six months in jail.

On March 23, the jury pronounced a guilty verdict on the senator, Beatrice, and Obinna Obeta, a doctor who acted as the middleman.

The jury held that they conspired to bring the 21-year-old at the centre of the matter to London to exploit him for his kidney.

The verdict is the first of its kind under the Modern Slavery Act 2015 of the UK.

Starnews NG reports that Ekweremadus and other accused persons were arrested by the London Metropolitan Police in June 2022.

They were alleged to have attempted to convince the doctors at the Royal Free Hospital in London to perform an £80,000 transplant on the donor who was presented as the cousin of their daughter Sonia.

Reacting to Starnews NG opinion poll on the matter, Brightezeigbo Chukwuemeka said, “I like it.”

Emmanuel Phil, reacted saying, “The same way he forgot his constituents that voted him to power.

In his opinion, Eleax Otu, responded saying, “Let him for rest as he recovers from the shock of been locked up, that is not Nigeria,

Sunday Aluko, reacted stating that, “The message is for those that benefitted from him financially.

Mamot Stephen, also says, “Make him remain there pls.

Meanwhile, Ekweremadu’s successor and the Senate Minority Whip, Senator Osita Ngwu, said the former Deputy Senate President, expressed deep appreciation to Nigerians from all walks of life for their prayers, support and solidarity since his recent ordeal in the United Kingdom.

According to him, the former DSP sent his greetings during their conversations when he visited him in the United Kingdom recently.

The lawmaker representing Enugu West Senatorial District, in a statement issued on Monday in Abuja, said Ekweremadu, who is currently serving a jail term abroad for organ harvesting, “acknowledged God’s mercy and kindness in his life, accepted his current situation with faith as well as grace, and did not express any sentiment suggesting that he had been forgotten by Nigerians.”

Senator Ngwu, however, condemned what he described as unfounded accusations against Ekweremadu in a news report being circulated by some uninformed individuals, expressing dismay at why they would be hell-bent on misleading the unsuspecting public.

He said that if not for the purposes of protecting the public who may be deceived by the fake news, he would never be bothered about issuing a rebuttal.

The lawmaker maintained that the report about Ekweremadu accusing Nigerians of abandoning him was false and did not know what the architects of such falsehood aimed to achieve.

“It has come to the attention of the Senate Minority Whip and Senator for the Enugu West District, Distinguished Senator Osita Ngwu, that a malicious story has been circulated by some individuals, who are known for engaging in malicious activities.

“These individuals’ stock-in-trade involves targeting innocent citizens with false accusations and spreading rumours. Their claim that the distinguished Senator Ekweremadu is lamenting that Nigerians have forgotten him in London is completely false.

The former Deputy President of the Senate holds a special place in the hearts of the people of the Enugu West District. No amount of cheap blackmail or indecent innuendos can alter the fact that he has served my constituents with excellence, and my people pray for his continued well-being and safety.
