The Federal Government has urged the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) to be vigilant and prevent criminals and terrorists from gaining entry into the country through electronic visas.
Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, issued the warning on Friday in Abuja while opening a two-week intensive training for 162 selected immigration officers.
The training focuses on handling electronic visa applications.
During his address, the minister stressed the need for officers to act responsibly and avoid any form of compromise.
He reminded them that their role is crucial in controlling who enters Nigeria.
He made it clear that issuing visas to criminals would not be tolerated, and any officer who fails in their duty would face strict consequences.
Tunji-Ojo explained that Nigeria is committed to welcoming tourists, businesspeople, and investors to boost economic growth.
However, security remains a top priority, and immigration officers must ensure that only the right individuals receive visas.
He described their role as vital to national development, urging them to serve with integrity.
He also pointed out that immigration officers play a key part in making Nigeria a business-friendly destination. He urged them to improve the visa process, making it easier and more efficient while maintaining strict security measures.
He added that their work shapes how Nigeria is perceived by visitors, which can impact tourism and investment opportunities.
The minister concluded by stating that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration is focused on transforming the country and will not tolerate any actions that could compromise national security.
