The Nigerian Olympic Committee has officially expressed interest in hosting the 2030 Commonwealth Games. The announcement was made ahead of the March 28, 2025, deadline for submitting expressions of interest.
According to the NOC, Nigeria’s bid is centered on Abuja, the capital city, and aims to showcase the country’s growth, sports culture, and global relevance. However, the bid can only proceed with full backing from the federal government.
Nigeria had previously attempted to host the 2014 Games but lost to Glasgow, Scotland. The last time Nigeria hosted a major multi-sport event was in 2003, when the African Games were held in Abuja.
NOC spokesman Tony Nezianya said the 2003 experience offers a strong base for a successful 2030 bid.
“That experience will provide a solid foundation for Nigeria to host again, showcasing its ability to manage the logistics, hospitality, and infrastructure development required by such events,” the statement said.
He also emphasized that hosting the Games would highlight Nigeria’s progress and readiness on the global stage.
The 2026 edition of the Commonwealth Games is scheduled to take place in Glasgow, Scotland, after Australia’s Victoria state pulled out due to rising costs.
