Governor Umar Bago of Niger State has addressed the public to clear the air over concerns that his government was targeting people with dreadlocks in its efforts to stop criminal activities.
The issue started after the government recently announced plans to tackle hooliganism in the state.
This led to confusion, with many believing that people with dreadlocks were being blamed.
However, Bago explained that the government’s concern was not with dreadlocks but with a group that has been causing trouble and happens to use that hairstyle.
He said the actions of this group had wrongly painted a negative picture of others who wear dreadlocks peacefully.
Bago also said people with dreadlocks who are doing business or planning to invest in Niger State should not be afraid.
According to him, the state is open to everyone who obeys the law and wants to live or work there peacefully.
He made it clear that the aim is to remove violent groups from the streets, not to chase away innocent citizens based on how they look.
The governor added that some parts of the media had made the issue worse by spreading wrong information.
He urged the public to ignore the false stories and focus on the real aim of the government’s campaign, which is to make the state safer for all.
Governor Bago reassured everyone that Niger State remains a friendly place for all peaceful and law-abiding people, including those with dreadlocks.
