The Nigerian Citizens Association South Africa (NICASA) has strongly condemned the brutal killing of two Nigerian nationals, Mr. Austin Amarachukwu from Imo State and Mr. Owolabi Ayotunde from Lagos State, in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, NICASA President, Mr. Frank Onyekwelu, expressed deep shock, sadness, and outrage over the “senseless and cold-blooded” murders, describing them as unacceptable and demanding swift justice.
“We condemn this barbaric act in the strongest terms and call on both the South African and Nigerian Governments to stop at nothing in thoroughly investigating this crime and ensuring those responsible are swiftly apprehended and prosecuted under the law,” Onyekwelu stated.
While the exact circumstances surrounding the killings remain unclear at the time of reporting, the incident has sparked concern and grief within the Nigerian community in South Africa.
Onyekwelu called for calm among Nigerians living in the country, urging them to remain vigilant and law-abiding, despite the understandable anger and pain the tragedy has caused.
“These lives matter, and their families deserve answers and closure. However, we strongly discourage any act of retaliation or unlawful behavior,” he added.
The NICASA president confirmed that Nigeria’s High Commission and Consulate in South Africa are actively engaging with South African law enforcement and other relevant authorities to ensure justice is served and support is provided to the bereaved families.
NICASA also pledged continued engagement with authorities at all levels to ensure the safety and rights of Nigerians living in the country, while monitoring the ongoing investigation through its KwaZulu-Natal chapter.
“May the souls of Austin Amarachukwu and Owolabi Ayotunde rest in peace. May their memories inspire us to fight for justice, unity, and the protection of our community,” Onyekwelu concluded.
The killings have reignited concerns over the safety of Nigerians in South Africa, with calls mounting for both governments to take decisive steps in addressing violence against foreign nationals.
