The organizers behind the 2024 #EndBadGovernance protest have revealed plans to hold a nationwide protest on April 7, 2025, to challenge the emergency rule imposed in Rivers State and the use of the Cybercrime Act to suppress free speech.
The protest will be led by the Take It Back (TIB) Movement, one of the main groups involved in last year’s demonstration.
A flyer circulating on 𝕏 calls for supporters to gather at the National Assembly in Abuja to voice their opposition.
The protest will demand an end to the emergency rule in Rivers State, declared by President Bola Tinubu on March 18, 2025, and to the use of the Cybercrime Act by the government to target journalists, activists, and social media users.
Juwon Sanyaolu, the National Coordinator of TIB, explained that the protest will focus on two major issues: the repeal of the Cybercrime Act and the removal of the emergency rule in Rivers State.
He highlighted how the law has been used to silence free speech, particularly affecting activists, journalists, and social media influencers like SeaKing.
The emergency rule was put in place after a political conflict between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the Rivers State House of Assembly, which is aligned with former governor Nyesom Wike. Despite criticism, including claims that the action violates the constitution, the National Assembly has expressed support for President Tinubu’s decision.
Sanyaolu also mentioned that the protest would not only target the emergency rule but also address concerns over bad governance under the current administration, which many feel has caused hardship for Nigerians.
While the protest will start in Abuja, Sanyaolu noted that more locations for the protest across the country will be announced soon.
