What was meant to be a peaceful inauguration ceremony turned into a tense scene on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, as the newly elected President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Atiku Abubakar Isah, raised serious accusations against Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu.
Isah, who was elected during the association’s national convention on February 27, claimed that Seyi Tinubu tried to stop the event scheduled at The Wells Carlton Hotel in Asokoro, Abuja.
He alleged that Seyi Tinubu, accompanied by security personnel and other individuals, arrived at the hotel with the aim of forcefully disrupting the event.
According to Isah, the hotel’s management was allegedly pressured to shut down all activities, trapping guests inside and creating panic among attendees.
He claimed this move was meant to prevent the smooth conduct of the inauguration ceremony, which was already underway by 11am with the venue filled with guests.
The student leader went further to allege that Seyi Tinubu had previously tried to offer him money, and when that failed, chose to resort to violence.
Isah claimed that Seyi Tinubu and his security team were stationed directly in front of his hotel room, posing a serious threat to his safety.
Another student official, who chose not to be named due to fear of backlash, described the situation as deeply disturbing.
He said the incident shows the need to defend student leadership from outside influence and intimidation, especially when students choose their leaders through internal democratic processes.
As of the time of reporting, there has been no official response from Seyi Tinubu or his team regarding the allegations.
The situation has raised concerns among student groups and the public about the safety of elected student leaders and the freedom of student associations to hold their events without external interference.
