The Chairperson of National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives in Ogun State, Roseline Solarin, has raised the alarm over the ‘acute shortage’ of nurses in the state.

Solarin said this on Tuesday on the sidelines of the 2021 Annual Nurses Week held at the Nurse’s house in Abeokuta, the state capital.

She claimed that at least, three health workers in the state travel out of Nigeria weekly in search of greener pastures.

Solarin added that about 215 nurses across 20 local government areas of the state were expected to handle 448 functional health facilities.

She said, “In Ogun State today, the total number of nurses that we have in the 20 local government areas are about 215 and we have 448 functional health facilities.

“So, if you want to put a nurse in each facility, will it go round? Moreover, we have comprehensive health centres where you require about 10 nurses to be in that centre, and the last time that employment was done at the local level was 2006.

Solarin, however, attributed the exodus of health workers to poor remuneration, insecurity and lack of basic equipment bedevilling the Nigeria’s health sector.

She asked the state government to declare a state of emergency in the health sector.

Solarin said, “Honestly speaking, a lot of our members are relocating to the developed world. The reason is not farfetched.

“One, there is poor remuneration; health workers are not well treated. Some of the incentives that would make them to work better are not available.

“Insecurity is causing a lot of high blood pressure in the lives of people because you are not sure of what is going to happen to you. You are not free to move anyhow.

“So, if you are not safe where you are working, what is the point of staying there? Our people are moving even as far as Kuwait, China, India to go and work.”
