My Family Was Locked Up – Impeached Lagos Speaker Obasa Breaks Silence

By: Bayero Ade

Former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has dismissed the allegations against him as unfounded and lacking evidence.

According to Politics Nigeria, Obasa addressed the situation during a gathering at his Joel Ogunnaike residence in Ikeja on Saturday. He claimed that his impeachment was carried out without adhering to due process, alleging that the Lagos State Commissioner of Police led security forces to the Assembly ahead of his removal.

The former Speaker also alleged that over 200 police officers stormed his residences in Agege and Ikeja, locking his family members inside during the operation.

“If I am no longer the Speaker, it is not the end of the world,” Obasa stated. “But if you accuse me of corruption, you must provide evidence. Can anyone justify spending N16 billion to build an ordinary gate? It’s not like we are building the wall of Jericho.”

His impeachment was supported by more than two-thirds of the 40-member House, citing alleged misconduct and other offences. Following his removal, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, the Deputy Speaker, was elected as the new Speaker. This makes her the first woman to lead the Lagos legislative body and the first female Speaker in the Southwest region.

Obasa, who has represented Agege Constituency I in the Assembly since 2007, became Speaker in June 2015. He held the position until his removal in January 2025.
