Several prominent members of the Labour Party (LP) in Enugu State, including Mr. Dennis Agbo and Mark-Chidi Obetta, who represent the Igboeze/Udenu and Igboeze South/Nsukka Federal Constituencies, respectively, officially joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Thursday.
They were joined by Mr. Malachi-Okey Onyechi, the representative of Nsukka West State Constituency, marking a significant shift in local political dynamics.
Their defections followed closely after two key figures of the LP, Prince Emeka Mamah and Titus Odo, made the move to the PDP shortly after LP’s 2023 gubernatorial candidate, Chijioke Edeoga, switched parties. Mamah and Odo had previously been members of the PDP before their brief tenure in LP.
During the defection event at the PDP Secretariat in Enugu, Onyechi expressed his enthusiasm for returning to the PDP, promising to contribute to the party’s growth. He highlighted Governor Peter Mbah’s developmental initiatives, especially the N2 billion project that spans all 260 political wards in the state.
Obetta, too, emphasized that his decision to rejoin PDP was influenced by the impressive development across various sectors such as transportation, education, healthcare, and hospitality in the state. He stated, “Enugu State will achieve even more if we all unite in support of Governor Mbah.”
Agbo extended his gratitude to his constituents for their support and predicted that the LP’s presence in Enugu would significantly shrink. He expressed confidence that the opposition party would struggle to regain influence in the state and praised Governor Mbah’s leadership, suggesting that he deserved a second term.
Dr. Martin Chukwunwike, the PDP Chairman in Enugu, welcomed the defectors, noting that their return was a major boost for the party. He also acknowledged that the challenges faced in the 2023 elections had been overcome, expressing optimism for a smoother 2027 election.
