The Nigerian Army has given a detailed account of how a soldier died after being attacked by a mentally unstable man at Imota, Ikorodu, Lagos State.
In a statement on the incident, the Army said the attack occurred on 16 November 2025 at about 4:00pm during an internal security operation in the community.
The soldier, who was deployed to help calm rising tension in the area, was reportedly struck on the head with a heavy stick by the attacker, leaving him with severe head injuries.
“The soldier was struck on the head by a mentally unstable person while attempting to restore order in Imota. Colleagues at the scene swiftly neutralised the attacker and recovered the soldier’s weapon,” the statement said.
He was rushed to the Ikorodu General Hospital, where he was confirmed dead.
The Army added that the remains of the soldier had been buried according to Islamic rites, with the Acting Commanding Officer and other officers of the 81 Division present at the funeral.
Extending condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased, the Army described him as a dedicated serviceman who died in the line of duty.
The 81 Division has also commenced an investigation to ascertain the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
The statement, signed by Lieutenant Colonel Musa Yahaya, Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 81 Division, noted that the Division had taken cognisance of a viral video on the incident.
“The Headquarters 81 Division Nigerian Army has taken note of the viral video related to this tragic incident. While an investigation is ongoing, it is important to provide preliminary information regarding the events of that day,” it added.
