Efon Alaaye, Ekiti State, was thrown into mourning after a woman, Modupe Alasin, reportedly lost her life following a brutal assault by her husband over lateness to the farm.
According to eyewitnesses, the tragic incident occurred on Monday morning when an argument broke out between the couple. The husband, angered by his wife’s delay in preparing for farm work, allegedly flogged her mercilessly with a cane despite her desperate cries for mercy.
A witness who pleaded anonymity told reporters that the assault lasted for several minutes. “The woman was shouting and begging him to stop, but he continued beating her until she became weak,” the source recounted.
After the beating, the husband allegedly ordered Modupe to fetch water from a nearby stream. However, she reportedly collapsed beside the stream and died on the spot, unable to withstand the injuries and exhaustion.
When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the Ekiti State Police Command, SP Sunday Abutu, confirmed the incident. He said the suspect had been arrested and is currently in custody as investigations continue.
The incident has triggered shock and condemnation in the community, with residents describing it as a “barbaric” act that reflects the rising menace of domestic violence in the country.
Community leaders have called on security agencies and human rights groups to ensure justice is served and to intensify campaigns against gender-based violence.
