The Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called on the Federal Government to take urgent steps toward restoring public confidence in Nigeria’s transport infrastructure following Tuesday’s Abuja–Kaduna train derailment.
A passenger train travelling from Abuja to Kaduna derailed in the early hours of Tuesday, leaving several carriages overturned and causing panic among passengers. Though no fatalities were immediately confirmed, some passengers sustained injuries.
Reacting in a post on his official X handle, Obi expressed sadness over the incident and extended prayers to the victims.
“I am deeply saddened by the news of the Abuja–Kaduna train derailment today. My heartfelt prayers are with the injured and all affected,” Obi wrote.
He emphasized the importance of rail transport to national development and urged swift government intervention.
“The rail transport system is a critical component of development, and we must continue to embrace it. I urge the authorities to act swiftly to provide adequate medical support to the injured, ensure accountability, and restore confidence in our transport infrastructure,” he added.
The Abuja–Kaduna rail corridor, a critical link between the Federal Capital Territory and northern Nigeria, has faced a series of security and operational challenges in recent years. Tuesday’s derailment has once again raised concerns over the safety and reliability of Nigeria’s transport system.
