A 40-year-old man, Olarewaju Mustapha, was on Thursday brought before a Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ado-Ekiti over claims that he stole goats worth N600,000.
Mustapha, who reportedly has no fixed address, was charged with theft and pleaded not guilty to the allegation.
According to the police prosecutor, Inspector Akinwale Oriyomi, the incident occurred around 10 p.m. on May 1 in the Ipole Iloro-Ekiti area. He told the court that the accused, alongside others who remain at large, allegedly stole five goats.
The prosecutor said the defendant was caught by members of the community and later handed over to the police. The alleged offence, Oriyomi added, contravenes Section 302(1)(a) of the Ekiti State Criminal Law, 2021.
He requested that the case be adjourned to allow time to review the case file and present witnesses.
Defence counsel Michael Olaleye appealed to the court to grant his client bail, assuring that he would adhere to all the conditions imposed.
Chief Magistrate Abayomi Adeosun granted bail in the sum of N50,000 with one surety in the same amount. The case was adjourned until June 2 for further proceedings.
