The Labour Party’s caretaker leadership, headed by Senator Nenadi Usman, has initiated a formal inquiry into Julius Abure, the party’s embattled National Chairman, over multiple accusations of corruption, forgery, and misconduct.
At a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday, Usman disclosed that a disciplinary panel had been constituted to examine the claims against Abure. The committee is chaired by Senator Ireti Kingibe, with party figure Peter Ameh serving as secretary.
The move comes amid growing tension within the party, following the Supreme Court’s ruling on April 4, 2025. Usman criticized Abure’s continued claim to the chairmanship despite the judgment and gave him 48 hours to stop representing himself as the party leader.
“In light of the Supreme Court’s verdict, the caretaker leadership is alarmed by Julius Abure’s actions, especially his insistence on acting as National Chairman. A special panel will thoroughly investigate his conduct and its implications for the party’s integrity,” she stated.
Usman also revealed that Abure will be formally served with disciplinary notice, urging him to face the serious allegations against him rather than further tarnishing the party’s reputation.
The caretaker committee also dismissed a recent disciplinary move by Abure’s faction targeting Abia State Governor Alex Otti, describing it as illegitimate.
“It is vital to point out that Abure and his expired National Working Committee have no standing to discipline Governor Otti or any other member,” Usman added.
She extended a formal apology to Governor Otti and former presidential candidate Peter Obi over previous remarks made by Abure, which she labeled as inappropriate.
Meanwhile, last week, the faction led by Abure reportedly accused Governor Otti and others of engaging in activities contrary to party principles. A disciplinary team was subsequently formed to address the issue, with Dr. Ayo Olorunfemi appointed as chairman and Alhaji Umar Farouk as secretary. Other members include Kehinde Edun, Mrs. Dudu Manuga, and Callistus Ihejiagwa.
Despite the ongoing rift, the group under Abure’s leadership said it remains committed to reconciliation and urged aggrieved members to support peace efforts.
