Lookman Scores as Nigeria Beat Tanzania 2-1 in AFCON Opener

By Charles Maduka

Nigeria began their Africa Cup of Nations campaign with a 2-1 victory over Tanzania, with goals from Semi Ajayi and Ademola Lookman sealing all three points in their opening Group C match.

The Super Eagles controlled much of the first half and came close to scoring early, with Akor Adams hitting the woodwork and Victor Osimhen seeing an effort cleared off the line after rounding the goalkeeper. Nigeria eventually took the lead when Semi Ajayi headed home Alex Iwobi’s cross from a corner to put his side ahead.

Tanzania responded after the break and briefly shocked the Nigerian supporters when Charles M’Mombwa finished calmly from close range to make it 1-1. The goal came after a well-worked move that caught the Nigerian defence off guard.

Nigeria, however, wasted no time in restoring their advantage. Just moments after conceding, Ademola Lookman fired a powerful left-footed shot into the net following another assist from Iwobi, putting the Super Eagles back in front.

Tanzania pushed hard for another equaliser and created chances, but Nigeria held on for the win. The result gives the Super Eagles a positive start to the tournament as they look ahead to their next Group C clash against Tunisia.
