The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency, in collaboration with EPPlus Sustainability Network, has engaged secondary school students across the state in an initiative to promote plastic waste management.
The programme, tagged Project SOLVE 2.0: Solutions for a Viable Environment, with the theme “Towards a Future with Zero Plastic Pollution,” was held at the LASEPA headquarters in Alausa, Ikeja. It featured an environmental innovation competition that brought together students from both public and private schools to present creative ideas for tackling plastic waste in their communities.
Oke Ira Senior Grammar School emerged winner of the competition, taking home a ₦500,000 prize, while Grandmates School and Oshodi Comprehensive Junior High School came second and third respectively. The contest featured 10 finalist schools, each showcasing unique environmental projects such as Trash to Treasure, Transparent Land, and EcoCycle.
Speaking at the event, the General Manager of LASEPA, Tunde Ajayi, said the competition was designed to assess students’ understanding of environmental issues and encourage them to develop practical solutions. He added that LASEPA was committed to both awareness creation and enforcement efforts aimed at reducing pollution and maintaining clean waterways across Lagos.
Deputy Team Lead of EPPlus, Mosadoluwa Otenaike, explained that Project SOLVE was a continuous initiative to nurture environmental consciousness among students. She said the winning schools would be mentored to implement their projects. Also, Dr. Sojinu Olasunkanmi from the Ministry of Environment commended the collaboration between government and non-profit organisations, describing it as a step toward building a sustainable future for Lagos.
