The Lagos State Government has enrolled 130,000 heads of households into the National Social Register as part of efforts to facilitate the Federal Government’s cash transfer initiative aimed at supporting vulnerable Nigerians.
Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, Ope George, announced the development at a press briefing in Alausa, Ikeja. He explained that the integration process includes linking residents’ National Identification Numbers to the Lagos State Single Social Register, which serves as a subset of the national database.
George said the effort is in response to the economic hardship caused by the removal of fuel subsidy, the collapse of the foreign exchange window, and the anticipated rollout of the Federal Government’s N75,000 relief grant.
“The Federal Government, through the Presidential Panel, has mandated that household records on the national register be updated, particularly with NIN and location details,” he said.
The process, which began on April 9, 2025, has covered all 57 local government and local council development areas in the state. According to George, the update was made possible through the collaboration of the State Operations Coordinating Unit and Community-Based Targeting Teams at the grassroots level.
He noted that the top-performing local government areas in the exercise include Ikorodu with 16,418 households, Alimosho with 14,964, and Mushin with 10,712.
The update is a critical step in ensuring the successful distribution of the Federal Government’s planned cash transfers to cushion the effects of ongoing economic reforms.
