Lagos Assembly to Probe Former Speaker Obasa Over Alleged Financial Misconduct

By Bayero Ade

The Lagos State House of Assembly has disclosed its intention to investigate allegations of fraud and financial mismanagement levelled against its former Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa.

According to Olukayode Ogundipe, the spokesperson for the Assembly, the inquiry will commence once Obasa resumes his duties.

Ogundipe stated that the Assembly would address the allegations, which include claims of improper expenditure, upon Obasa’s return.

While some aspects of the financial records remain unclear, Ogundipe assured that the Assembly would take necessary and appropriate steps.

Responding to inquiries about involving the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ogundipe explained that the decision would be determined after Obasa’s resumption.

He added that the Assembly might establish a committee to investigate the claims or entrust the matter to its leadership, ensuring adherence to due process.

Obasa was impeached on January 13 by a majority of the Assembly’s 40 members over alleged misconduct and financial irregularities.

However, Obasa has refuted the allegations, insisting that his removal was procedurally flawed and asserting that he remains the legitimate Speaker.

Despite Obasa’s claims, Ogundipe maintained that the impeachment process was conducted in full compliance with constitutional provisions.

“Mudashiru Obasa remains part of us, and the process that led to his removal was entirely constitutional. The procedure we followed was in line with the law, and it was done with full transparency. The members acted in accordance with what they observed, and we have simply transitioned leadership as per the constitution,” Ogundipe emphasised.

The Assembly awaits Obasa’s return to determine the next steps regarding the investigation.
