Labour Party Accuses APC of Undermining Nigeria’s Democracy

The Labour Party has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of deliberately weakening opposition parties in a move that threatens Nigeria’s democratic foundation.

Senator Nenadi Usman, the acting National Chairman of the Labour Party, made the allegations during the African Democratic Congress Global Award and Dinner Night held in Abuja. She asserted that the APC has been using state institutions to intimidate and suppress opposition voices, effectively stifling dissent and alternative political views.

“A robust and functional opposition is vital for any democracy,” Usman said, warning that without such opposition, Nigeria risks being a democracy in name only.

In response, APC’s National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Basiru, dismissed the accusations, characterizing the opposition coalition as a fragmented group of “internally displaced politicians” lacking unity.

Recognizing the internal difficulties within opposition parties, Usman called for them to overcome personal ambitions and unite to provide Nigerians with credible political alternatives. She stressed the importance of patriotism and responsibility, cautioning that a political system dominated by a single party undermines democratic legitimacy.
