Kano Govt Declares Monday Public Holiday to Mourn Athletes Lost in Accident

The Kano State Government has declared Monday, June 2, 2025, a public holiday to mourn the tragic loss of 22 young athletes, coaches, and officials who died in a fatal road accident. The victims were returning from the recently concluded National Sports Festival in Ogun State.

Governor Abba Yusuf, currently performing the 2025 Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia, described the accident as a deeply saddening event for Kano, mourning the loss of some of the state’s most promising youths.

In a statement issued on Saturday and signed by his spokesperson, Sanusi Tofa, the governor expressed heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and the wider sports community.

“With a heavy heart, I received the devastating news of the loss of 22 innocent lives and injuries to several others. On behalf of the government and people of Kano, I extend our sincerest sympathies to the bereaved families. We share your grief and mourn with you,” the governor stated.

The statement confirmed that the victims were members of Kano’s official delegation to the National Sports Festival, which included athletes, coaches, and officials. The accident occurred along the Kano–Zaria expressway.

“This tragic loss is felt by the entire state and has brought deep sorrow. Many of those who lost their lives were talented youths representing Kano on the national stage,” the statement added.

Governor Yusuf called on residents to remain calm and united during this difficult period and assured that the government would provide support to the families of both the deceased and injured.

To honor the victims, the governor directed that Monday be observed as a public holiday throughout Kano State, encouraging citizens to reflect, pray, and support the grieving families.

“As a mark of respect and remembrance, His Excellency has declared June 2, 2025, a public holiday for all residents of Kano to mourn and pray for the departed souls,” the statement said.

Additionally, the state government appealed to Islamic leaders and the Muslim community within and outside Kano to offer special prayers for the victims and comfort for their families during this trying time.
