Tragedy struck in Imo State on Monday evening as no fewer than 15 members of the Jehovah’s Witness congregation lost their lives in a fatal accident at Awomama Bridge.
The accident, which occurred around 6:45 p.m., involved a trailer reportedly driving against traffic and a bus conveying the worshippers. The victims, all from Agwa community in Oguta Local Government Area, were returning from their annual convention held in Uli, Anambra State.
Eyewitnesses said the impact of the collision was devastating, killing all passengers in the bus on the spot. Their remains have since been deposited in a morgue.
Chairman of Oguta Local Government Area, Ifeanyi Nnani, described the accident as a “dark and sorrowful moment” for the people of Agwa and the entire council area.
In a condolence message issued through his aide, Orum Desmond, Nnani extended sympathies to the bereaved families, praying for divine comfort.
“Oguta Local Government Area has once again witnessed another dark moment, very tragic and sorrowful. These pathetic incidents have once more reminded the people of Oguta and Agwa of the intense sorrow that suddenly took away the lives of Agwa people in the past,” he said.
The latest tragedy has thrown Agwa community into deep mourning as residents continue to grapple with the loss of their loved ones.
