At least 30 people have been killed in coordinated attacks by armed men on communities in Kastina-Ala and Logo Local Government Areas of Benue State.
The attacks, which occurred between Sunday and the early hours of Monday, left a trail of destruction. Eyewitnesses reported that 10 bodies were recovered in Kastina-Ala, while 20 were found in Logo. The perpetrators are suspected to be heavily armed militia from outside Nigeria.
Chief Joseph Anawah, a leader in Logo, recounted the assault on Azege and surrounding settlements in Tombo Council Ward. “The attackers, numbering over 300, struck around 7 a.m. on Sunday. Local security forces were overwhelmed by their numbers and advanced weapons. A military jet eventually forced them to retreat,” he said.
In Kastina-Ala, Council Chairman Justine Shaku confirmed attacks on Adabo village and Tse Gwebe in Utange Council Ward. “The attackers killed many residents and destroyed valuable properties,” Shaku stated.
Police Public Relations Officer, Catherine Anene, also confirmed the incident but provided a lower casualty figure than community reports.
The tragic events have sparked widespread concern, with calls for immediate government action to address the growing insecurity in the region.
