Twelve inmates have escaped from the Federal Correctional Center in Kotonkarfe, Kogi State, following a jailbreak that occurred in the early hours of Monday.
According to PUNCH, the Kogi State Commissioner for Information and Communication, Kingsley Femi Fanwo, confirmed the incident in a statement, describing it as regrettable. He praised the swift response of security agencies and assured residents that measures are being put in place to prevent a similar occurrence.
Fanwo emphasized that the state government is collaborating with security agencies to investigate the circumstances surrounding the escape.
“The report that the inmates fled through the tower without any structural damage raises serious concerns,” he stated. “A detailed investigation will be carried out to establish how the escape happened, recapture the fugitives, and identify any internal involvement.”
Governor Ahmed Ododo has directed the State Security Adviser to work closely with correctional authorities and security agencies to reinforce security at prison facilities across the state.
The government also reiterated its commitment to assisting security agencies with the necessary resources to enhance their efficiency.
Assuring residents that the situation is under control, Fanwo urged the public to remain calm and go about their daily activities, emphasizing that safeguarding lives and property remains the government’s top priority.
