The potential bout between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk is be one for the undisputed heavyweight crown, but Anthony Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn believes a clash with Joshua would draw a bigger audience.
Following Usyk’s victory over Joshua last month to retain his IBF, WBO and IBO heavyweight titles, he decleared that he wanted Fury next and it seemed that the next biggest fight in boxing would be a unification clash with the WBC champion.
The fight between Fury and Usyk could see the first undisputed heavyweight champion crowned in the four belt era.
Initially, Fury wanted to fight Usyk in December, but the Ukrainian has decided he will not return to the ring until next year, as he needs to recover from injuries he sustained against Joshua and spend time with his family.
Now, ‘The Gypsy King’ has turned his attention to Joshua, offering the British-Nigerian a shot at his WBC title in December which the latter duly accepted.
From here, proceedings started moving quickly, as Fury’s promoter, Frank Warren, revealed that an offer was sent over on Tuesday.
“We’re sending a written offer across today to them. My son George spoke with Eddie Hearn yesterday,” Warren told talkSPORT.
It’s us who have made the approach to give AJ a great opportunity to get himself back into the top level against the world champion Tyson.
“He’s willing to make that voluntary defence, so we’ll send the offer across today and then they’ll have to look at it and decide whether they wanna grab this with both hands.”
Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, is not convinced that this fight offer from Fury and his team is genuine. However, he believes that a fight with Joshua would be a much bigger and more lucrative option for Fury than a bout with Usyk.
“The reality is, and some people don’t like to hear it, AJ’s still arguably the biggest draw in boxing,” Hearn told talkSPORT.
“I mean AJ vs Fury is still five times as big as Fury vs Usyk, that’s the reality.
“By the way, Fury vs Usyk is a great fight, it’s for the undisputed championship, but like I said, people want to see AJ vs Fury.
“Even when he lost to Usyk I said to people, ‘You will see the Fury fight.’ I didn’t think that would be December, but whether that’s next spring, next summer, that fight remains the biggest in boxing.”
