The Ogun State Government has declared Wednesday, August 20, 2026, as a public holiday in commemoration of this year’s Isese Day celebration.
The annual event, dedicated to the promotion and preservation of Yoruba religion and traditions, is observed across the Southwest as a day of cultural pride and spiritual reflection.
A statement issued on Monday by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Information and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, said the holiday underscores Governor Dapo Abiodun’s recognition of the vital role Yoruba heritage plays in shaping the state’s identity and cultural landscape.
“Isese Day serves as an opportunity for adherents of the Yoruba religion to honour their ancestors, engage in traditional practices, and promote the values and teachings inherent in their spiritual beliefs,” the statement read.
According to Akinmade, the celebration goes beyond religious rites, as it fosters unity among practitioners and invites the wider public to appreciate and respect the richness of Yoruba culture.
“The celebration not only strengthens the sense of community among adherents but also enables the broader society to appreciate and respect the cultural tapestry that Yoruba tradition contributes to Nigeria,” he added.
Isese Day was formally adopted as a public holiday in Ogun State in 2023 after the House of Assembly passed a motion to that effect, which was subsequently approved by Governor Abiodun.
With this year’s declaration, the government reaffirmed its commitment to cultural preservation, urging citizens to use the day for reflection, unity, and celebration of indigenous values.
