The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has urged the United States government and the international community to launch an independent inquiry into alleged persistent ethno-religious killings and insecurity in the South-East region of Nigeria.
In a statement issued by its spokesperson, Emma Powerful, the group said the investigation is necessary following the recent classification of Nigeria as a “country of particular concern” by the US government. IPOB insisted that the move should not end at the designation, but must include an international probe to uncover those responsible for the violence.
According to the statement, the proposed inquiry should expose “the perpetrators, financiers and political enablers” behind attacks targeting Igbo and Christian communities.
IPOB described the US action as a “moral victory” and accused the Nigerian government of complicity in the violence. It also referenced a similar ruling in Canada, which reportedly identified major Nigerian political parties as enabling terrorism.
The group expressed appreciation to former US President Donald Trump, Senator Ted Cruz, and other foreign supporters for amplifying concerns about alleged persecution of Christians and Igbo people in Nigeria. IPOB also acknowledged the support of groups such as American Veterans of Igbo Descent (AVID) and other pro-self-determination advocates.
Reaffirming its commitment to the struggle for Biafra, IPOB praised its members and supporters for their continued efforts, describing the development as a diplomatic milestone for the movement.
