Internal crisis deepens in PDP amid growing calls for Damagum’s removal

By Bayero Ade

The leadership turmoil within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reached a boiling point as pressure mounts on the acting National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Damagum, to step down.

Party sources indicate that deep-seated divisions among various factions are worsening, threatening the unity of the opposition party.

During a recent Board of Trustees (BoT) meeting in Abuja, members expressed dissatisfaction over the party’s current state. A major point of contention is the delay by the National Working Committee (NWC) in convening the long-awaited National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, which many see as critical to resolving the party’s challenges.

The repeated postponements have sparked allegations that Damagum’s leadership has been compromised by vested interests, further fueling calls for his removal.

Adding to the party’s troubles is the recent defection of Eriethake Ibori-Suenu, a PDP lawmaker from Delta State and daughter of former Governor James Ibori, to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Many within the PDP see this as a sign of declining confidence in the party under Damagum’s stewardship.

In a communique issued after the BoT meeting, members demanded that the NEC meeting be convened by February 2025 to address key issues, including selecting a replacement for former National Chairman Senator Iyorchia Ayu, a responsibility assigned to the North Central Zone.

Damagum has also faced accusations from critics aligned with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who claim he is prioritizing the interests of the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, over the broader party agenda.

Despite the criticisms, Damagum’s camp remains confident, arguing that a court injunction guarantees his tenure until December 2025. His supporters believe he can complete his term. However, some insiders suggest that Damagum may willingly return to his position as Deputy National Chairman (North) if his role as acting Chairman is cut short.
