A 17-year-old Imo State University (IMSU) student, Jesse Chidiebere, was arrested by the Imo State Police Command for allegedly faking her own kidnapping and death.
According to a statement from the command’s public relations officer, ASP Henry Okoye, Chidiebere was apprehended by officers from the Orji Police Divisional Headquarters on October 26, 2024, around 10 p.m., after a distress call from concerned individuals reported her missing. The incident reportedly caused widespread fear among her family and the IMSU community.
The alarm was raised when a WhatsApp message sent from Chidiebere’s account claimed she had been kidnapped and killed, prompting her family to go to the Orji Police Station for verification.
Following an investigation, police officers discovered the next morning, October 27, 2024, that Chidiebere was alive and had orchestrated the incident as a prank on social media.
ASP Okoye confirmed that Chidiebere will face charges, and further investigations are underway to uncover the reasons behind her actions.
Imo State Commissioner of Police, CP Aboki Danjuma, condemned the incident, describing it as a reckless prank that wasted valuable resources and incited public fear. He urged parents to warn their children against such risky behavior, reiterating the command’s commitment to combatting misinformation and ensuring public safety across the state.
