The Lagos State House of Assembly has appointed four new principal officers following the impeachment of the former speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, earlier this week.
According to NAN, the Speaker Mojisola Meranda (APC-Apapa 1) made the announcement during Friday’s plenary, where she presided as the new speaker. Obasa was impeached on Monday by 32 out of 40 members over alleged gross misconduct. The House clerk, Lekan Onafeko, was also suspended for alleged financial impropriety.
Additionally, the House dissolved all standing committees previously set up by the former speaker.
Meranda revealed that the new leadership appointments were a direct result of the leadership change. She announced Mr. Temitope Adewale (APC-Ifako-Ijaiye 1) as the new majority leader, Mr. Adedamola Kasunmu (APC-Ikeja 1) as deputy majority leader, Mr. Setonjo David (APC-Badagry 2) as chief whip, and Mr. Babatunde Saani (APC-Kosofe 2) as deputy chief whip.
Before Obasa’s impeachment, Mojeed Adams served as majority leader, with Kasunmu as deputy leader. Adams, now the new deputy speaker, was previously the chief whip, while Setonjo was deputy chief whip.
Notably, three lawmakers — Obasa, Adams, and Akinsanya — were absent during the first plenary under the new leadership.
