Immigration Bars Ex NNPC Chiefs From Leaving Nigeria

The Nigerian Immigration Service has placed former and current NNPC officials and contractors under strict watch to stop them from fleeing as a fraud investigation deepens.

Over the weekend, immigration flagged their passports and tightened checks at airports and borders, according to Daily Sun.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), working with the police and immigration, is probing how nearly $3 billion meant for repairing the Port Harcourt, Kaduna, and Warri refineries was mismanaged.

Some contractors were paid but failed to finish or even start the jobs.

Already, several former managing directors and top NNPC officials, including former Group CEO Mele Kyari, have been arrested.

The EFCC has demanded detailed pay records for 13 other top executives, including both current and retired staff.

The refinery projects, approved in 2021 with $1.5 billion set aside for Port Harcourt alone, have faced repeated delays despite promises of completion.

While NNPC announced progress in late 2023, operations slowed again by early 2025, raising fresh doubts and fueling the ongoing probe.
