‘I can’t appoint just anybody’ – Tinubu explains difficulty in releasing ambassadorial list

President Bola Tinubu has explained the reasons behind the delay in releasing the much-anticipated list of Nigerian ambassadors, saying the process is more complex than many assume.

Speaking in a video message that surfaced on Tuesday, Tinubu stressed that ambassadorial appointments could not be rushed, noting that he “can’t appoint just anybody” into such sensitive positions. He acknowledged that many Nigerians were eager to see the list unveiled but urged for continued patience.

“I couldn’t appoint everybody that I could have appointed, thank you for your patience till now. I still have some slots for ambassadorial positions that too many people are craving for, but it’s not easy stitching together those names,” the president said.

Tinubu further explained that his immediate focus has been on stabilising Nigeria’s fragile economy and restoring public confidence in governance. According to him, reviving the economy must take precedence before diplomatic postings can be finalised.

“First of all, cure the economy, bring hope to the people as that is what we stop for, and that hope is here. Thank you for believing in me,” he added.

The president also appreciated Nigerians for their understanding, assuring that the ambassadorial list would eventually reflect competence and the nation’s best interests.

The last set of ambassadors were appointed under the administration of late former President Muhammadu Buhari. Since Tinubu took office on May 29, 2023, the absence of new ambassadorial appointments has drawn criticism from stakeholders who argue that Nigeria risks losing momentum in its diplomatic engagements.

Despite mounting pressure, Tinubu has maintained that the appointments will be made carefully to ensure that only credible, capable, and loyal individuals represent Nigeria abroad.
