Grief has gripped the Nigerian and UK nursing communities following the sudden death of Nnena Miriam, a Nigerian nurse based in Leeds, United Kingdom.
Her lifeless body was discovered in her apartment by police after a close friend filed a missing person report.
According to Fellow Nurses Africa, a professional organization focused on the growth of African nurses, Miriam had not been seen or heard from since her last shift on Sunday.
Repeated calls and messages went unanswered, prompting her concerned friend to alert the authorities. Police later found her dead in her home under what the organization described as heartbreaking circumstances.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Fellow Nurses Africa expressed deep sorrow over her passing, describing her as a committed and compassionate healthcare professional.
“It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of one of our own, Nnena Miriam. She was a devoted nurse who practiced with empathy, diligence, and unwavering professionalism,” the statement read.
The timing of her death added to the shock. Miriam had only recently returned to the UK after holding her introduction ceremony in Nigeria in preparation for her traditional marriage.
The organization noted that Tuesday, April 29, was intended to be a joyful milestone in her life, marking the beginning of a new chapter—but instead, it became a day of mourning.
Colleagues have remembered her as a beacon of kindness and resilience who left a lasting impact on both her peers and the patients she cared for.
“Her loss is deeply felt across the healthcare community. We stand in solidarity with her family, friends, and fellow nurses as we seek answers in this time of sorrow,” the statement added.
Authorities are still investigating the cause of her death.
The incident echoed another tragic loss earlier this year involving Chidimma Ezenyili, a Nigerian caregiver in the UK who collapsed while attending to an elderly client in February and died two days later.
