As preparations intensify for the burial of former President Muhammadu Buhari, security has been strengthened across Daura and surrounding areas in Katsina State, where he will be laid to rest.
Buhari, who passed away on Sunday in a London hospital at the age of 82, will be buried in his hometown, Daura. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed Vice President Kashim Shettima and Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila to oversee the return of his remains to Nigeria.
Ahead of the funeral, security personnel have been deployed to sensitive locations including Umaru Musa Yaradua International Airport, the Daura Roundabout, and major access roads such as the Kayauki Daura route. Observers counted no fewer than 11 checkpoints along the road leading into Daura.
In addition to the tight security presence, officers have been stationed at Buhari’s private residence and the palace of the Emir of Daura, maintaining order and monitoring activities.
The late president’s home remained relatively quiet on Monday, with only a handful of mourners visiting. Security officials were seen maintaining a respectful presence around the area.
Meanwhile, a public holiday declared by the Katsina State Government to honour Buhari took many residents by surprise. Several students and civil servants were seen returning home after arriving at schools and offices unaware of the directive.
Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria, locals in Daura expressed sorrow over the loss, describing Buhari as a humble leader who stayed closely connected to his roots throughout his life and presidency.
Alhaji Lawal Nalado, a close neighbour, said Buhari never allowed power or position to affect his lifestyle. He recalled the former president’s punctuality, dedication to prayer, and generosity, particularly during festive seasons like Sallah, when he often distributed food, livestock, and money to the less fortunate.
Despite occupying Nigeria’s highest office, Nalado noted, Buhari continued to live simply and treated everyone equally.
Another resident, Alhaji Hamisu Ibrahim, praised the former leader for his deep religious commitment and focus on mentoring young people. He said Buhari frequently advised youths to embrace education, avoid drug use, and live morally upright lives.
Many residents believe Buhari’s legacy of honesty, discipline, and national service will leave a lasting mark and serve as a guide for generations to come.
