Gunmen on Sunday night attacked Ikn’gwakap village in Mushere Chiefdom, Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State, killing six people and setting several houses on fire.
Eyewitnesses said the assailants, who stormed the community around 11:00 pm, fired several gunshots into the air to announce their arrival before unleashing terror on residents.
The attack, which lasted for more than two hours, left many houses in ruins. Farm produce was also destroyed, with some looted and others set ablaze.
In the aftermath, community members called on government at all levels to urgently rise to their responsibility of protecting lives and property. They warned that the continued silence and inaction of authorities had emboldened the attackers to intensify violence against defenseless communities.
“The blood of our people must not continue to be shed in vain. The time for decisive action is now,” a statement from community leaders read, urging residents of Mushere and Bokkos to remain vigilant, united, and proactive in safeguarding their communities.
Efforts to reach the Plateau State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Alfred Alabo, were unsuccessful as he could not be reached at the time of filing this report.
