Gunmen kidnap popular monarch

On Saturday, May 18, 2024, HRM Ogwong Okon A. Abang, the Paramount Ruler of Mbo Local Government Area (LGA) of Akwa Ibom state, was forcefully taken from his palace in Ebughu by gunmen.

Despite the absence of any ransom demands from the abductors, the Akwa Ibom State Police Command has confirmed the monarch’s abduction.

ASP Timfon John, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the command, affirmed the incident, revealing that the Commissioner of Police, Ayilara Waheed Adedamola, along with other Service Commanders, including the Commissioner for Internal Security, have embarked on a visit to Mbo local council to assess the situation firsthand.

She said, “I can confirm that CP and other Service Commanders & Commissioner for Internal Security were there and addressed press corp.”

The abduction comes just a few days after medical physicians suspended operations following the kidnapping of their colleague, Dr John Robbin Esu, who remains in the kidnappers’ den three weeks later.
