…Wife escapes amid gunshots
Gunmen suspected to be kidnappers have abducted a senior official of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), Mr. Omoniyi Eleyinmi, alongside another unidentified individual in Supare-Akoko, Ondo State.
The incident occurred on Monday evening as Eleyinmi, who serves as the Faculty Officer in the university’s Faculty of Education, was returning home from work. Sources said the assailants had laid an ambush at his residence in Supare-Akoko, Akoko South-West Local Government Area, and opened fire shortly after he alighted from a commercial motorcycle.
His wife, who had stepped out to welcome him, narrowly escaped the hail of bullets and fled the scene.
According to a source close to the family, the attackers struck without warning and whisked Eleyinmi away. “They were already positioned at his house before he arrived and began shooting when he got off the motorcycle,” the source said.
A member of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), who confirmed the incident on condition of anonymity, said the family is yet to be contacted by the abductors.
Reacting to the development, the university’s spokesperson, Mr. Victor Akinpelumi, said the institution is in touch with security agencies and is committed to ensuring the safe return of its staff member.
“We have reported the case to the police, and they have assured us that action has been taken to secure his release,” Akinpelumi stated.
Confirming the abduction, the Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Olayinka Ayanlade, revealed that security operatives have been deployed to the area. He disclosed that one of the abducted individuals had already been rescued and is currently undergoing debriefing.
“They were accosted on a motorcycle by the kidnappers at Supare. One has been rescued, and efforts are ongoing to free the remaining victim,” Ayanlade said, adding that more details would be released as the investigation progresses.
