The Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF), comprising governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has described the resignation of the party’s National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, as a natural part of the party’s ongoing evolution and internal reforms.
It would be recalled that Ganduje had yesterday resigned as the Chairman of the ruling party.
In a communiqué released at the end of their two-day strategic retreat in Benin City, Edo State, the governors emphasized that the leadership change reflects the APC’s commitment to institutional development, unity, and responsive governance.
Reading the communiqué on Saturday, the Chairman of the Forum and Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodimma, said the meeting focused on harmonizing development strategies and deepening party cohesion.
He noted that Ganduje’s resignation was not a sign of crisis, but rather a strategic repositioning in line with the party’s long-term vision.
“His Excellency, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje’s resignation is in tandem with the party’s continued evolution,” the communiqué stated, underscoring the move as part of the APC’s broader reforms.
The statement, signed by Fred Itua, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State, also reaffirmed the APC’s position as Nigeria’s most institutionally stable political platform, citing its consistent record of electoral success, reforms, and national unity.
A key highlight of the meeting was the formal welcome of Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, and his supporters into the APC fold.
The Forum described the development as a testament to growing national consensus around President Bola Tinubu’s policies and leadership.
The governors also conducted a thorough review of the country’s political, economic, and security landscape.
They expressed satisfaction with the improved collaboration between federal and state governments and praised the Tinubu administration for prioritizing fiscal reforms, food security, energy transition, infrastructure development, and social sector revitalization.
“We are pleased with the renewed coordination between federal and state institutions, which is vital for national progress,” one governor, who asked not to be named, said.
The PGF also backed the administration’s macroeconomic policies, including the removal of fuel subsidies, exchange rate unification, and debt restructuring.
However, the Forum called for expanded efforts to promote inclusive growth through increased investment in job creation, food security, poverty reduction, small businesses, and social safety nets.
The governors reiterated the importance of sub-national governments in driving economic growth, pledging to advance economic decentralization in accordance with Section 13 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
They also welcomed the recent increase in fiscal allocations to states and noted the growing investor confidence in APC-led states, which they said is reflected in rising domestic and foreign investments across the federation.
