The Chairman of Funtua Local Government Area in Katsina State, Hon. Abdu Goya, has met with armed Fulani groups in a renewed peace outreach aimed at consolidating ongoing reconciliation efforts between the Fulani and Hausa communities in the area.
Sources told Starnews NG that the peace meeting took place in parts of Funtua as part of a wider initiative to sustain the fragile truce already reached between the warring groups.
Goya reportedly urged both sides to embrace dialogue, rebuild trust, and deepen understanding to ensure lasting peace in the region. He also appealed for the release of individuals still held captive following past confrontations.
The visit comes amid heightened diplomatic tension following U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent threat of sanctions against Nigeria and the country’s designation as a “nation of particular concern.”
According to sources familiar with the matter, the local council chairman emphasized that his mission was to “deepen the peace process already initiated between the armed Fulani and Hausa communities.”
Meanwhile, the visit followed fresh violence in parts of Katsina State. On Thursday, suspected bandits attacked Doguwar Dorawa, a farming community near Guga in Bakori Local Government Area, killing two community leaders — Alhaji Bishir and Alhaji Surajo — and abducting several residents despite an existing peace deal.
A community leader, Mahadi Danbinta Guga, described the killings as “cold-blooded,” adding that the assailants stormed the village around 10 p.m., operated for more than an hour, and left with abductees and looted items.
Residents said the attackers, believed to be loyalists of notorious bandit leaders Idi Abasu Aiki and Kwashen Garwa, arrived on motorcycles but hid them in nearby bushes before carrying out the assault.
Simultaneous attacks were also reported in Layin ‘Yannehu, where animals were rustled, while similar incidents have recently occurred in Ganjar, Alhazawa, and Gidan Nagari, leaving over 40 people abducted and several families displaced.
The Katsina State Police Command has yet to issue an official statement on the latest attacks as of the time of filing this report.
