Dr. Fabian Ihekweme, a former commissioner in Imo State, has been admitted to the hospital following his release from police custody, where he spent 61 days allegedly on the orders of Governor Hope Uzodimma.
According to Politics Nigeria, a video circulating on social media, shared by Sahara Reporters, shows Ihekweme in a frail state, lying on a hospital bed.
Ihekweme, known for his outspoken criticism of Governor Uzodimma, was arrested at his Abuja residence on November 27, 2024. He remained in detention without any formal charges and was reportedly kept in a notorious police cell, which may have affected his health.
After regaining his freedom, he issued an apology, though the circumstances surrounding it remain unclear.
His prolonged detention has sparked outrage among human rights groups and activists, who see it as an attempt to stifle free speech and suppress opposition voices.
The Nigerian Police have yet to release an official statement addressing the legality of his detention.
